Description

Suminat – 25 mg

This drug constitutes a generic name Sumatriptan, which is a pain relief/ anti migraine medicine used to relieve migraine headaches. It starts working by narrowing blood vessels around the brain. Sumatriptan also reduces substances in the body which are responsible for migraine symptoms such as headache, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and other symptoms of migraine. This medicine will not only provide cure for migraine attack, but it will stop or reduce the migraine attacks from occurring.       

It is sold under various trade names including Imitrex, Suminat (made by Sun Pharma) and Imigran (made by GSK). It is available in various forms like tablets, nasal spray as well as injections. It may also be given for other conditions which are not listed here.  


Important information about Sumatriptan

This medicine should not be taken in normal headache conditions. It must be taken only after a doctor has confirmed that your headache is indeed a migraine headache. It is not recommended for someone below than 18 years or above 65 years of age. You should avoid Sumatriptan antimigraine medicine if you are allergic to it, if you have medical history of heart disease (coronary heart disease or angina), have had heart attack or stroke, blood circulation problems, lack of blood supply to the heart, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe liver disease, ischemic bowel disease, or if your headache feels unusual (different from a usual migraine headache). 

Always remember to allow a gap of at least 2 hours between the two tablets or nasal sprays of Sumatriptan. A maximum dose of 200 mg strength and 40 mg of nasal sprays of this medication should be preferred within 24 hours duration. It belongs to a class of FDA pregnancy C drug. It may be not known whether it can harm an unborn baby if the drug has taken during the pregnancy stage. It is always advisable to ask your doctor if it is safe to in take this medicine while you are breast feeding.


Before taking Sumatriptan

Before taking Sumatriptan, remember to discuss all the above mentioned points with your doctor. Notify your doctor well in advance if you have following conditions: liver or kidney disease, seizures, high blood pressure, ischemic bowel disease, a heart rhythm condition, coronary artery disease (or risk factors such as diabetes, menopause, smoking, overweight or obesity, high triglyceride levels, having a family history of coronary artery disease, above 40 years of age, or a woman who has had a hysterectomy). Some of the above listed conditions may not warrant the use of this medicine. Your physician or doctor will also weigh your conditions with safe usage of this medicine and recommend you if it is safe for you or not.  


Dosage information

You should take Sumatriptan strictly by following the instructions given by your doctor. Do not alter the dosage unless your doctor advices you to do so. Prohibit the use of this drug if the prescription period is over. All medicines are come with a patient leaflet; you should go through the leaflet to know detailed information. High dosage of this medicine will make your conditions worsen.

Take Sumatriptan immediately after you notice headache symptoms, or after a migraine attack has already started. You may be given this medicine under medical supervision to know whether it is safe for you without causing any serious side effects. Do not crush or chew the tablet, swallow the tablet as a whole with full glass of water. In case of Sumatriptan nasal spray, read the instructions cited on medication leaflet for effective use. Before using the spray, clear your nose and avoid any blowing or sneezing just after the spray. If your headache doesn’t subside completely and still continues, take another dose after 2 hours. In case you don’t recognize any improvement in your condition, seek medical care immediately. You must inform your doctor if you have more than 4 migraine attacks within 30 days. In case of Sumatriptan injection, you can use auto injection device which lets you self inject the medication into your thigh or deltoid area (shoulder joint). Ask your doctor about the proper use of this medicine.


Note: The dosage may depend on a range of factors including age, sex, drug allergies or seriousness of the condition among several other factors. To ensure the better results, always remember to follow your doctor’s instruction.    


What if you miss a dose

As Sumatriptan is taken on a need to need basis; you are not likely to miss a dose.


What if you overdose

In case of an overdose, seek medical attention immediately or contact your doctor. Overdose of this drug may cause symptoms like tremors or shaking, redness on skin, breathing problems, blue colored lips or fingernails, watery eyes or mouth, weakness, lack of coordination, or seizures.


Things to avoid while taking Sumatriptan

It is recommended that you should not take Sumatriptan within 24 hour interval before or after using other anti migraine medicine like Sumatriptan injection, rizatriptan, eletriptan, zolmitriptan, or others; or ergot medications like ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, or methylergonovine. Avoid the use Sumatriptan, if you have used any of these MAO inhibitor medications in the last 14 days: isocarboxazid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, or furazolidone. Notify your doctor if you are using an antidepressant such as citalopram, desvenlafaxine, duloxetine, escitalopram,fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline, or venlafaxine. This medicine will make you dizzy, thereby impacting on your mental abilities. So, do not indulge in activities like driving, using heavy machinery which require high mental awareness.


Side Effects

A serious side effects due to this medicine are very few.  However, some people may experience serious side effects like blue colored nails, coldness in hand or feet, hearing changes, seizures, or mood changes. This drug may increase the level of serotonin in the body and rarely cause the dangerous condition termed as serotonin syndrome or toxicity. The risk of this syndrome raises more if you take high serotonin made drugs. Call your doctor right away if you experience any of these serious side effects.

Some of the common side effects caused by this medicine are flushing, tingling sensation, numbness, prickling, warm feeling, chest/jaw/neck tightness, weakness, drowsiness, or giddiness. If any of these conditions persist or deteriorate, consult your doctor right away.


Interaction with other drugs

Many anti-depressant drugs may interact with Sumatriptan. Notify your doctor if you are already taking an antidepressant like citalopram, desvenlafaxine, duloxetine, escitalopram,fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline, or venlafaxine. Also, let your doctor know about all the medicines and related products that you may be using. Never start a new medication without your doctor’s advice.
