This drug has a generic name levonorgestrel, which is marketed under the brand name Plan B. It is also sold under various brand names across the world. Levonorgestrel is a female hormone that stops ovulation (egg release from ovary). This pill is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or if other contraceptive methods have failed like condom tear or missing, or other oral contraceptive pill fails. This pill will prevent from pregnancy by causing alterations in your cervical mucus and uterine lining which makes it difficult for the sperms to reach the uterus and fertilize an ovum (female egg). Also, it becomes harder for a fertilized egg to attach with the uterine wall.


Important information about Levonorgestrel

Levonorgestrel is only effective in preventing pregnancy after unprotected sex or the condition in which a contraceptive fails. It will not remove a pregnancy if it has already begun means when the fertilized egg has already attached itself on to the wall of uterus. A levonorgestrel should be taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. It should not be used as a regular form of contraception and only be used once in a while. Before taking Levonorgestrel

Side Effects

Many women may not witness any side effects after taking levonorgestrel, but it may not be in your case. Many other drugs which may interact with levonorgestrel are rifampin; barbiturate drugs like amobarbital, butabarbital, mephobarbital, secobarbital, or phenobarbital; or seizure medications like phenytoin or carbamazepine.
